A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT

Two rivers that runs from north to the south of the city of Oslo are called Akerselva and Alna river (Alnaelva).

The Akerselva river starts at the Lake Maridal (Maridalsvannet) and runs about 8 kilometres through the urban areas like Nordre Aker, Sagene, Grünerløkka, Oslo centre and Grønland.

During the industrial revolution the river gave power to numerous industry companies in Oslo but after 150 years of industrial and sewage discharges along the river, began the initiative to limit emissions and revive the flora and fauna.

Today the Akerselva is “Oslo’s green lung” and it’s said that the salmon runa and spawna in the upper part of the river. There are many parks and nature trails along the way and during the sunny and hot summer days you can see people bathing or just chilling on the coast of the river.

The Alna River (Alnaelva) runs through Oslo from Alnsjøen lake to the Oslo Fjord at Bjørvika. It runs through the boroughs of Gamle Oslo, Nordstrand, Helsfyr, Østensjø, Alna, and Grorud. Large sections of the river run in culverts and the river is highly polluted, partially because it is used as a sewer drain but the Municipality of Oslo is creating linked walking trails and green spaces along the length of the river.

Åmodt bru, suspension bridge originaly build in 1855 over the Drammen River in Buskerud. Hundred years later the bridge was dismantled and moved piece by piece to a new site on the Aker River. The bridge today is used only for bicycles and pedestrians.
