IN GIRO // Barolo

Situated some 60 kilometers south from Capriglio, was our first destination of the day.

Barolo in province of Cuneo is best known for the denominated production of red wine. Its strategic position on the slopes of Langhe hills, combination of soil types, altitude and climate makes it perfect for growing nebbiolo grape.

Our visit to the local Barolo winery occurred right in the middle of the grape harvest but regardless we had and interesting visit to a local Barolo wine production facility.

Virna Borgogno is the first woman in Italy whit a degree in enology and today with her sister, Ivana, they operate the family estate with vineyards dating back to 1720.

Companies rebranding at the early 21st century, has reflected the major role played by women in the one day predominantly male business.

With the estate that contains about 10 hectares in the area of Barolo, the company Barolo’s areas as well as few parcels in cares for their vineyards through innovative and eco-friendly methods.

In addition to Barolo, the estate produces two Barbera d’Alba wines; one of these, the San Giovanni cru. The estate also makes Langhe Nebbiolo DOC, a Langhe rosso, a Langhe Arneis and a rosé wine.

They age their wine in Slavonian oak barrels and ship deliver them around the world

When asked about production difficulties faced during the pandemic and post-pandemic period we were shocked by the fact that the real danger is the climate change. The production codes are very strict and they don’t allow the irrigation of the fields. However the (still) warm October weather have caused the real challenge and some bigger thinking on changing the wine making laws and the nature is the one in charge apparently.

The dry

Until the new regulations and climate surprises there is still enough wine to be consumed and we didn’t want to slip onto that opportunity.
